Why Does Music Have the Power to Heal?

Dear Doc:

I listen to indie rock 2 or 3 hours a day, but it has yet to prevent me from having a cold or getting the flu. So why do you continue to claim that music has the power to heal?
Joe in Des Moines

Dear Joe:

Unfortunately, medical science doesn't know why music has the power to heal. However, studies have proven that it can work to reduce the frequency of migraine headaches, lower blood pressure, help premature babies grow and allow hospital patients to endure their ordeals with less pain medication.

In one exciting study at Georgia Baptist Medical Center, premature babies gained weight faster when music was piped into their intensive care unit. They also got out of intensive care an average of 5 days sooner than those not exposed to music.

Another study at California State University showed that migraine sufferers who listened to relaxing music had 83 percent fewer headaches than those who practiced biofeedback or relaxation techniques.

More Healing Music...

Another astounding case of healing music involved Samantha L., a baby still alive in her brain-dead mother's womb after a horrible auto accident. The mom had been pregnant for 7 months.

Although the woman had no hope of recovery, the doctors kept her on life support with the hope that Samantha would grow. For six weeks, nurses and other medical support staff visited the room, singing and playing music to stimulate the baby--songs they used to entertain their own small children.

The staffers were stunned to find that the faster they sang, the faster Samantha moved inside her mother. It was possible to feel Samantha stirring as she responded to the sounds and rhythms.

Finally, a medical team performed a cesarean section and Samantha was born a completely healthy baby girl. Songs from Saturday morning TV shows had provided her with the companionship and contact she needed to survive the long weeks waiting to be born.

Ghost Wanted For Trespassing

Authorities in a Los Angeles suburb have been asked by a resident to be on the lookout for a ghost that "trespassed" on his property without permission.

According to the complaint, the ghost appeared in the master bedroom of the ranch house, frightening the man and his wife.

Said a spokesman, who asked to remain anonymous due to the unique nature of the complaint, "During the encounter, the ghost appeared to be searching for his ex-wife. The residents indicated to it that there was no such woman in the home. The ghost eventually disappeared. But when it returned the next night looking for the same woman, the residents called for assistance. They filed a report and the ghost is now wanted for trespassing, a misdemeanor."

Obama Voters Find Extra $ in Their Pockets

In a nationwide phenomena, people who voted for Barack Obama are discovering money in their possession during times of need--and they have absolutely no idea how it got there!

In an exclusive interview, university researcher Alan Simon told me,"These individuals are hard-working people who have fallen on hard times. They've lost their jobs or had their homes foreclosed on. But just when they're down to their last nickle, they discover a sum of money to tide them over. And, based on my research, their only common characteristic is that they voted for Barack Obama!"

Here are a few of the many cases Simon has uncovered. "I have verified that all of the people involved voted for Barack Obama," he told me:

* In Detroit, "Adele," a single mother who'd just been laid off by Chrysler, was embarrassed when she didn't have enough money in her wallet to pay for the groceries she'd just bought for her four children. But when Adele reached into her pocket for her car keys, she discovered five twenty dollar bills--enough to pay for the groceries and buy her kids a filling meal at McDonald's.

*A homeless Oregon family living in their car discovered a cache of 2,000 discarded Coke cans in the car's broken trunk--and no one in the family drinks the beverage. The cash they received at the bottle return that afternoon allowed them to stay in a warm motel room that night.

*A down-and-out California woman put her final quarter in a video poker machine and won $578, which she used to buy new clothes and get a job the next day!

Woman Performs CPR Using "Audacity of Hope" As Guide

In yet one more illustration of the world-wide impact of Barack Obama, a Romanian woman has performed life-saving CPR--using only his autobiography as a guide!

As east European paranormal expert Andrei Duprei told me in a revealing e-mail, "This event is significant because the woman is an accountant with no CPR training--and Mr. Barack Obama's book contains absolutely no discussion of the technique. However, after reading a few paragraphs of Obama's inspiring words, the woman became convinced that she could perform CPR--and she did!"

Continued Duprei, "The incident began when a teenage girl in a Belgrade park accidentally smashed into a tree while she was rollerblading. The impact knocked her unconscious and when bystanders rushed to her aid, she was no longer breathing.

"The accountant, whose first name is Anteliat, was enjoying a rare sunny day on a park bench, reading a translated copy of 'The Audacity of Hope.' A big fan of Mr. Barack Obama, she was at first annoyed that the hollering throng surrounding the girl was negatively impacting her concentration.

"However, when Anteliat strode over to the crowd to tell everybody to pipe down, she saw that the rollerblader was not breathing--and that no one was doing anything to help her.

"Disturbed and confused, Antleliat, fell to her knees beside the girl's immobile body. Unsure of what to do, she read aloud a passage from Mr. Barack's book, hoping to inspire the unconscious victim to wake up. This did not happen, but suddenly, Anteliat's mind was filled with the knowledge of how to perform CPR. Over the next few minutes, she breathed into the girl's mouth until suddenly the victim vomited and began breathing on her own.

"Utilizing a donated handkerchief, Antletiat wiped the girl's deposited debris from her lips and cheeks. When police authorities arrived, they at first did not believe her tale, until the unruly crowd convinced them that Antletiat had saved a life using 'Audacity of Hope' as a guide.

"The tome now never leaves Antletiat's side, in case she requires inspiration in another emergency."
